strike a (powerful) pose!

Over the time I spend at MetaBroadcast, Ergonomics (from small tweaks to bigger ones) is kind of a never ending issue for me as I keep an eye out for anything the team may suggest would make their lives easier. The trick is, these things aren’t always immediately straight forward so I better keep my eyes open 😉

There’s a lot, for example, on the subject of posture: what’s a good posture? How can you improve yours? What happens if you maintain a bad one throughout time? The interesting thing is it is proved that good, powerful, postures actually influence hormone changes that can potentially change your life! If you haven’t yet, here’s a nice TED talk about it:

I don’t know about you, but I’d be willing to guess 9/10 of us have constantly been told “sit up straight” while we were growing up—and some of us well past that ;)—but there’s a very well know study back from 2006 showing that, actually, sitting at an angle of 90º may not be the perfect posture, despite others standing by a so-called neutral pelvis position while advocating that the best posture is always the next one.

That actually makes sense to me—being active—and at MetaBroadcast everyone has heard me say (probably more than needed!) that taking a break is a good thing and can do wonders for us. And for those wanting to take this to the next level there’s a device you can use too. Regardless of keeping in mind that we need to be kind to ourselves (and our backs) by moving around more, we will still be sitting for a big portion of our days, so we take measures to keep everyone comfortable. Be it by using back supports, adjustable height screen clamps, better lighting, foot rests, wrist supports and stress balls or laptop stands.

So, if the simple tweak of adopting a better (more powerful) pose or posture will increase our testosterone and decrease our cortisol levels, then we can change our lives by striking better poses! It seems pretty easy for such a meaningful change, doesn’t it? Who’s up for it?
