For the last time in 2016, #MetaBeers returns, in more ways than one. We’ll be back at our regular spot, the Crown Tavern on Clerkenwell Green. It’s been freshly refurbished—they’ve even added a bar in our room, and even more shiny decor!
This follows on from a one-off special in legal London, at Ye Olde Cock Tavern on Fleet Street, where we talked TV that feels like movies, were defeated by the buffet that kept on coming, and had the only metadata pub quiz with floral prizes.
The next date for your diary (as advertised in our newsletter) is Wednesday 16 November from 6:30pm for a 7pm start. We’ll be talking about what makes the perfect series. And we’ll be celebrating 9 years of MetaBroadcast. Join us. There will be cake!
#MetaBeers are our monthly get together with colleagues, friends, partners, and likeminded folks. They are spoken in plain English, and are a fun night out where we all expand our views as we consume the best ales and finger foods an English pub has to offer.
november: what makes a perfect series?
In November we’ll talk about series, and what makes the perfect one. Short or long? Serious or whimsical? Series build followers, and make stars. Let’s just not mention anyone who got their break in The Apprentice!
We’re putting the finishing touches to our schedule. Here’s the plan for the evening, so far:
- chris — a complex relationship with the truth
- thomas — character chemistry
- devo — what makes a great series
- martins — tv and code
- emils — picking cherries
- mirona — tv and christmas
- …and finally luke — for the one and only metadata pub quiz, with prizes in bloom
how does it work?
You sign up to #MetaBeers, let us know you’re joining, and come along with all the +1s you like. We prepare talks, buy pints & treats, then we all gather round and make merry. We’re having as many 5 minute talks as needed to cover the theme, but never more than 1 hour. If you’d like a spot (this month, in May 2017, etc.) on the running order, do get in touch*.
back in october: tv that feels like movies
This all follows on from October, when we talked about we’ll talk about the immersive power of TV shows that feel like movies. Mad Men, Sherlock and True Detective came to mind. Here’s the evening in tweets:
We’re back with #MetaBeers, talking about immersive TV that feels like movies ^CJ— MetaBroadcast (@MetaBroadcast) October 19, 2016
I started by talking about exhibit A – Netflix, and their double pivot: from DVD to streaming, and also from movies to TV #MetaBeers ^CJ— MetaBroadcast (@MetaBroadcast) October 19, 2016
TV is great, as long as it is NOT a movie. Lots of examples from Luke H of how TV is best when different from movies #MetaBeers ^CJ— MetaBroadcast (@MetaBroadcast) October 19, 2016
Lots of reasons why TV is becoming a stronger medium for creativity vs film #MetaBeers ^CJ— MetaBroadcast (@MetaBroadcast) October 19, 2016
Talks done, now we eat, and enjoy what we believe to be the only metadata pub quiz. The winners come away with floral prizes #MetaBeers ^CJ— MetaBroadcast (@MetaBroadcast) October 19, 2016
next time: what about january?
That’s right, the next one is after Christmas! In January, we will finally talk about movies themselves! Did you watch any over Christmas, are you looking forward to Oscar season? What role does video content over 90 mins still have? How can we help people discover the best movies?. That’s on the 18th, so save the date 🙂
and in february?
Looking further into the future, in February we’ll look in again on short form content. It’ll be 12 years and one day since YouTube started. What role does video less than 10 mins play today, how has it changed, and how will it change in the coming years?
But that’s still a way away. For now, please do join us on Wednesday, November 17th.
Updated: a few times 14-16 November, to update the schedule.
