watchsomething.tv: out with the old, in with the new
Today we retired Test Tube Telly from service, after a fascinating and very successful six-month experiment.
Test Tube Telly was commissioned by Tom Loosemore from 4iP and Andy Pipes from Channel 4, and largely built by the team here at MetaBroadcast. It used URIplay, the open source metadata aggregator we’ve been developing over the last couple of years.
We’ll write more in due course about the lessons we learned from running and tweaking Test Tube Telly. But if you’re of a more curious bent, you might like to keep an eye on watchsomething.tv, which is our latest experiment in web video on demand. In this new project we’ll be taking the principles from TTT to the next level. Our focus will be on making mass-market long-form navigation that is customised, without asking for more than the occasional fun click from users.
It’s really early days for Watch Something, but we’ve decided to make our mistakes in public on this one. So bear with us! And give it a go, it’d be great to hear which type of navigation speaks more to your heart.
The current site uses a very basic back-end, and has not benefited from much design input. We’ve been working with Mark at AME Creative to make this a beautiful experience, and we’ll be rolling in and improving lots of the successful features of TTT, too. The project is partly funded by MetaBroadcast, and partly by the Technology Strategy Board.
